Kids Golf Foundation
The Kids Golf Foundation held its first Swing Analysis Training Session Saturday, April 18, 2009 bringing sixteen excited youth participants to the Indoor Golf Arena at Harvest Lodge at Rich Harvest Farms. Site Coordinators and junior golfers with their parents or guardians gathered to learn about key teaching positions and how the golf swing can be dramatically improved by using tools like video analysis. The Foundation partnered with MyTourSwing to host the event.
Charlie McKenna, MyTourSwing owner, kicked off the afternoon by showing participants videos of professional athletes and professional golfers and explained how every swing is different and unique, but all follow a series of key full swing positions. “Our goal was to offer the kids something they hadn’t seen before,†said McKenna. MyTourSwing used a variety of teaching aides throughout the event to reinforce the importance of the ten positions and how they can improve full swing results.
“Our site is very fortunate to have been given this opportunity,†said Anderson Smith, DuPage AME Site Coordinator. “Swing analysis is the most effective way of teaching the game of golf… it will bring our kids to a new level.†Anderson Smith, along with other parents and volunteers, facilitated putting and driving activities for junior golfers who were warming up before their chance to be videotaped.
Travon McCain, age 16, from DuPage AME shared his personal thoughts about video swing analysis, “I got to see every part of my swing, which will help me play better in tournaments and become a better golfer.†Each one of the junior golfers had an individual lesson with Head PGA Teaching Professional for MyTourSwing, Lou Solarte, and many were able to work on improving their swing immediately. “Kids can learn more visually than they do verbally,†said Solarte.
The day of activities concluded with two presentations. Foundation Program Coordinator Ben Copeland presented a 2008 Volunteer of the Year plaque to DuPage AME volunteer Terrence Suber. McKenna also had a special gift for the group – a compact Flip video camera that will allow DuPage AME members to easily record and upload video to MyTourSwing.
“Providing opportunities by partnering with organizations such as MyTourSwing is important to our Foundation,†said Foundation Director Holly Alcala, “We feel it is part of our responsibility to keep the youth in our programs engaged throughout the year. The Swing Analysis Training Session is one of many that our Foundation currently offers and in the future we are looking to expand.†The Kids Golf Foundation used the Indoor Golf Arena in February for a Caddie Training and Information Session and plans to continue bringing program participants to the state-of-the-art facility for future events.
